Toledo Zoo – Toledeo, Ohio

The Toledo Zoo – Toledo, Ohio. The Toledo Zoo, Toledo, Ohio is not the most famous zoo in the state of Ohio, but it does have many things that no other zoo in the world has like the only African animal carousel and the only Kihansi Spray Toad in captivity.  The Toledo Zoo also boasts of many firsts, like the first Hippoquarium in the world and one of only two zoos in the world to house Saddle-Billed Storks, though it is unclear which of the two zoos had them first.

The main feature at the Toledo Zoo is Africa!  Africa! is an African safari type of attraction, which consists of 12 acres of land designed to simulate different African terrain, five acres of which are African plains.  African animals, such as the Wildebeest, the Grant’s Zebra, and the Masai Giraffe roam free.  Visitors are invited to either view Africa! from observation decks or circle it on a train to get up close and personal with the animals, yet in a safe environment.

The Toledo Zoo, Toledo, Ohio was started in 1900 when somebody donated a woodchuck to the city of Toledo.  The zoo remained the property of the city of Toledo up until 1982 when it was taken over by the Toledo Zoological Society.  In 1930 an aviary was built at the zoo, which has become one of the more notable aviaries in the world.  The aviary was renovated in 1998 and went on to win the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Exhibit Award of Excellence just one year later, in 1999.

Snow Leopards are very nearly extinct.  There are only about 1,000 snow leopards known to be in existence today, and of those, 300 are in captivity.  The Toledo Zoo is where five of them were born.  The zoo also has the Kihansi Spray Toad, which is already extinct otherwise.  It is the only place in the world where this toad can be seen.

While certainly not the largest, or the most famous zoo in Ohio, the Toledo Zoo, Toledo, Ohio has a lot to offer any visitor who wants to explore Africa, see extinct animals, or just have a whole day of fun visiting all of the animals, including those at the Fisher Price petting zoo for the kids, or for the kids at heart.  There are many more attractions at the Toledo Zoo as well.  Plan a day or two so that you won’t miss a thing.
